The Director of Music

CPT Anthony Chew commenced his musical training in secondary school in 1971 under the baton of the late Lawrence Francisco. Being musically inclined, he later studied the clarinet under George Sobrielo, violin under Francis Leong and saxophone under Lawrence Francisco.

After secondary school and junior college, he pursued a full-time career in music and enlisten in the Singapore Armored Regiment Band where he performed on the clarinet and served as the Senior Music Librarian and Secretary to the Senior Director of Music, Maj Ervin Dragon. CPT  Chew also chaired the Singapore Armed Forces Band Display Committee over a period of five years. 1980 saw his transfer to the Republic of Singapore Air Force Band, serving in similar capacity.

After leaving service with the Armed Forces in 1982, he was appointed the Director of Music to Swiss Winds, a position he holds to this day.

From 1985 to 1995, Anthony was appointed and served as Bandmaster of the Salvation Army Singapore Central Corps Band.

No stranger to the school band arena, Anthony has toured with various bands over the past two decades. The bands under his baton have visited and performed in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Hawaii, Australia, East and West Malaysia and Hong Kong.

Bands under his baton: Swiss Winds,  and Zwinds- Band of the Zhonghua Secondary School.

Swiss Cottage Secondary School has recognised his educational contributions and has honoured him with the Oustanding Conductor Award.

Other notable achievements include the inception, formation and development of the Bukit Batok Community Club Band- West Winds where he served as first music director.

As an adjudicator, CPT Anthony Chew has adjudicated at band festivals overseas and is a member of the British Association of Symphonic Bands and Wind Ensembles and National Association of Bands, United States of America. He is also a founding member of the Band Director’s Association (Singapore) and was recently appointed Honorary Life Member in recognition of outstanding service rendered.

CPT Chew holds a post-graduate specialist Diploma in Music from the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University and Dip LCM Conducting from the London College of Music, Thames Valley University, England.
